Professor Ishiwata specializes in the field of biophysics, specifically the study of the mechanisms underlying molecular motors and the assembly of biological structures. The lab has recently acquired the capacity to observe single molecular motors in the 10nm size range under an optical microscope, which greatly facilitates research in these areas. Prof. Ishiwata was first drawn to the field when he entered graduate school by the crystal-like structure of skeletal muscle. Awed by its immaculate construction, he has since sought to further understand how such a structure is put together. Progress has been made thus far, but more work remains to be done to solve this intriguing puzzle of nature.
